I think I found a reason to have my insurance cover some plastic surgery for me. A real reason. Something I actually really need fixed whether it would look better or not.

I found the following story by a local TV station in Tulsa, OK. I thought it was more balanced than most, so I wanted to share it here.
They mention the incredible benefits of weight loss surgery, and then spend a good bit of the segment with a man who’s had some significant problems as a result.
The man’s name is Micah, and he admits that the problems he has are partially his fault. He forgets to eat, and I am guessing he’s not been super faithful with his vitamins. He’s had spells where he feels drunk and has even passed out a few times. [Read more →]

It’s been forever since I’ve posted, and I’m sorry. I guess I do these things in spurts.
In fact, I originally wrote this post at the end of January. But computer problems prevented me from publishing it. Below, I mention that I’m 2 pounds away from goal. I’ve been hovering between goal and five pounds below it for several weeks now.
But what I was feeling at the time seems important, even though I’ve worked a lot of it out. I’ll post again soon (I promise!), but for now, here is the post from January:
A lot is happening. I’m sooo close to my goal weight – like 2 pounds away as of this morning. I’ve actually hit it once, but then bounced back up a few pounds the next day. Now that I’m here, tho, I’ve revised it. I think there are still 10 or 15 pounds of fat lurking in my tummy and thighs.
Between losing all this weight, and the really bad experience I had last year (where I really could have died), I realize that I’ve changed tremendously. The outside is obvious – sometimes I look in the mirror, and I just don’t recognize the person looking back. She’s a lot hotter than the me I’m used to.
It’s all because I watched House last night. (December 2nd). His patient was a DVD fitness queen, hawking her healthy tips via infomercial. In the beginning of the show, she’s running with a really fat guy up a set of bleachers. Only the fat guy makes it, and Ms. Fitness passes out.
I’ll be honest. I watch House mostly for the characters, and don’t really pay a lot of attention to the medical stuff. It usually flies right over my head. I’m really just killing time until The Mentalist comes on anyway. (OMG Simon Baker is HOT! He may be replacing my Keifer Sutherland Crush.)
But last night’s House was different, and my interest was piqued during the MRI (or some related test), when it was discovered Ms. Fitness had had (gasp!) a gastric bypass! Dun dun dun…. [Read more →]

How do you enjoy Thanksgiving dinner after gastric bypass surgery?
I don’t know about you, but for me Thanksgiving dinner used to be all about the food. Everything is sooo good, and much of it is stuff you only eat during the holidays. Green bean casserole is one of my all time favorites. So is sweet potato souffle. And of course stuffing. Can’t forget the stuffing.
Last Thanksgiving was my first with Pouchie. And while my brain wanted to dive into the carb-laden overabundance that was covering my dining table, Pouchie was pretty firm in his (her? is Pouchie a girl or a boy? Hmmmm… Probably something deep-seated and psychological about calling my stomach “him”. Of course, naming my stomach at all is a little weird, come to think of it…) resistance. [Read more →]

Sometimes I am amazed at the things that are reported as “news,” even though they should be common sense. Nonetheless, it seems scientists have proven that bariatric surgery success improves with exercise.
Researchers from The Miriam Hospital’s Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine say, “Previously inactive patients who became physically active after bariatric surgery lost more weight and achieved greater improvements in quality of life than those patients who remained inactive.” [Read more →]
